Thinking about the amount of paper we use on a daily basis, whether it is in the office, at school or at home, is often something we take for granted. But have we thought about the impact it has on the environment?
Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 26mᶟ of water, 2.3mᶟ of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil and 4,100-kilowatt hours of electricity. Recycling paper reduces the number of raw materials consumed on a daily basis. This means that fewer trees are being cut down for paper production. By recycling paper, you can contribute to this serious problem we are facing global warming and air pollution. Recycling paper constitutes a 74% reduction in gas emissions and a 35% reduction in water-polluting emissions.
Saves landfill space – Landfills are becoming overfull with little or no space for new waste. The aim is the reduction of the environmental impact of waste, during the manufacturing, converting /printing, collecting, sorting and recycling processes to ensure the optimal and environmentally sound recycling of used paper and board products. By recycling paper, you can contribute to improved air and water quality.
The process of paper Waste Recycling involves mixing used paper with water to break it down. It is then chopped up and heated, which breaks it down further into strands of cellulose, a type of organic plant material, this resulting mixture is called the pulp, or slurry. It is strained through screens, which remove any glue or plastic that may still be in the mixture then cleaned, de-inked, bleached, and mixed with water. Then it can be made into new paper. The same fibres can be recycled about seven times, but they get shorter every time and eventually are strained out.
